Ohio State Report Card - MLSD Response

Today, the Ohio School Report Cards were released for the 2015-2016 school year.
We are the first to acknowledge that on the surface, the results for Madison Local Schools are not what we had hoped for as an overall indication of our students’ success, as is true for the majority of schools across Ohio. However, it is very important to keep in mind that this year’s results reflect a transition year, with new tests and test administration as well as higher achievement targets and expectations set by the state.

As a district, we will use these indicators, which are presented on a scale of A-F, to inform us of target areas in need of growth and improvement. However, we will not allow them to define us.

We recognize that some of our stakeholders will use these results to gauge the district’s overall success, much like we use our students’ own report cards to gauge their success in a class. However, we urge you to do so cautiously, because without a true understanding of the process and changes to the reports, the two simply do not compare. We assure you however, that we recognize and work diligently each day to use such data to inform instruction at Madison Local Schools. There is room for improvement and we feel confident that the report card will continue to help both our staff and students be successful.

In closing, we believe that our community knows and appreciates the kind of education our district delivers everyday in the classrooms at Madison. Equally, so much of what our community values cannot be measured on a standardized test, yet our state seems fixated only on measures which can be tested, and in fact, testing many more times each year than federal legislation requires. Therefore, as a district, we will adjust our focus and do our best to hone in on the new state target. We will not however lose sight of the standards of a quality education that our Mohawk community values.
